Winter swells in the coastal desert.
Introduction
Agadir, a major coastal city in southern Morocco, is known as a holiday destination and is also is home to a major port. Morocco has a wave-rich coastline, but it’s maybe most know surf town is Tagazhout, about 45 min. north of this provincial center. Passing this port traveling north, you quickly come to smaller towns and then ultimately villages, driving windy, arid roads past hotels, seemingly empty in the winter surf season, wide sandy beaches and the bottom tail of the Atlas mountains sliding into the sea. This region in recent years have also become a popular surf destination. Anchor point (right) and other reeling right hand point breaks attract pro’s and the amenable weather, beaches and an abundance of surf schools attract surf tourists from Europe and beyond.

Driving up and down the coast line the road varies from in-the-midst of construction brand new highways, the driver guessing where the lines would be and driving half into the oncoming lane to doge traffic cones, new winding tree lined boulevards, presumably a project of the high-end hotels that line them. Surf culture is everywhere and one wonders what it was like before it arrived. It’s not hard as Moroccan culture is rich, distinctive and seeps into every experience, keeping history and identity close to the surface. It turns out, Djellabas make great changing robes.
